How long does it take to kayak the Apostle Islands?
Good thing, since ahead of us we had a handful of crossings — paddling big channels between islands. By the end of the day we would cover more than 15 miles in about seven hours of paddling.
Can you kayak between Apostle Islands?
Because of Lake Superior’s power and unpredictability, the National Park Service does NOT recommend the use of small open boats, canoes, open cockpit or sit-upon kayaks, and paddleboards for travel between islands or to the sea caves. A sea kayak is the recommended kayak that should be used in the Apostle Islands.

Recreational kayaks should not be used on large bodies of open water ( Lake Superior ) or used on windy days. A canoe is an open boat that is wider than a kayak. Their height makes them hard to control in windy conditions on open water.
How do you camp in the Apostle Islands?
To make camping reservations and obtain a camping permit go to Recreation.gov or call the Bayfield headquarters to speak to a Park Ranger at 715-779-3397, select option 2. Please note that you can only book an itinerary within a 30 day window of when you want to start your trip. This does not include group camping.
Where are the sea caves in the Apostle Islands?
This is located about 18 miles west of Bayfield off Highway 13. Boaters wishing to visit the Sand Island caves will find a boat launch at Little Sand Bay, 13 miles north of Bayfield. To reach the mainland caves in winter, visitors should drive to the end of Meyers Road.

Kayaks are located on the beach at Big Bay Town Park. Tours cross the Big Bay to the cliffs and sea caves at Big Bay Point, with a take-out on the rocks and options to snack, snorkel, or cliff jump (very popular at the park).
